Just
finished reading
Pragmatic Thinking and Learning: Refactor Your Wetware
by Andy Hunt, a book that I found to be a little confusing to say
the least. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed reading it, found certain
parts of it to be of value but personally I don’t think anyone
today has a complete understanding on how the human brain works
(wetware is just a fancy way of saying brain). So the book, as a
whole, seems a bit of pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo mixed with some
facts and experiments that we all can relate to. It also has a
somewhat pseudo scientific starting point in the
Dreyfus model of skill acquisition
but don’t let this fool you.
I think that the author manages to get with this mostly because
he’s also the author of another book, which already has entered the
real of legend:
The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master.
You can see that the term pragmatic is strongly “overloaded”.
Anyway, if you ever have the chance to pick up the book and browse
it please do. But I wouldn’t rely very much on the points made
there and I would take everything with a grain of salt.
