You may have noticed the tag-line of this blog: the green green
grass. If not, it’s the little text that appears right under the
big bold title of my blog.
When I first visited the United States, back in 2006, the strongest
image that was left imprinted in my mind was that of a lawn in
front of some random house. Saw it while riding the bus. Some
people might remember the long transoceanic flight, the border
customs or the landmarks they visit. I remembered the grass. It
seemed to be perfect in every aspect I could think of: height,
color, density. Every lawn after that first initial sighting seemed
to shared the same characteristics.

I thought about the aesthetics of a normal patch of grass in
Romania. The difference seemed to be radical. It’s not that the
Romanian grass was ugly or something but it never captured my
attention this way. It was a part of the landscape and there was
nothing exciting about it. Puzzled I thought to my self: “what do
you know? the grass is greener over here in the US”.
Now, fast forward a few years until the moment I started living in
the US plus a few weeks, maybe months. I am walking past one of
these lawns. A van is stopped near it. By the logo on the van and
the activities the people are performing on the lawn I quickly
realize that these people are from what you’d call a landscaping
firm. Their job is to make the lawn look good. And somebody is
probably paying good money for this to happen.
Thinking back I realize that the pleasant feeling I got was not
from the actual sight of the grass but from the feeling of
perfection. The grass is just a symbol for the things that are
worth it. You need to put in time and effort to obtain the results
that will make you happy :)
